We heard the Netherlands Bach Society perform Bach's b-minor Mass the other evening, and their 1st soprano was out due to illness. Marieke Steenhoek handled all the ensemble parts and Catherine Webster, a favorite of ours, took the solos and duets, then sang with the chorus between. It worked very well, both women sang beautifully, and Webster brings such infectious joy and tone to her performances that everyone else stepped it up a notch.

I hope your throat heals perfectly. Think of singing as a sport -- would you play with a pulled muscle? You *are* lucky to have friends who will sub for you; think what it must be like for contraltos who are so few and far between!
